The club opened in 1961 as Lakewood Country Club, designed by Robert Bruce Harris, known for the Garden School of golf architecture; the clubhouse was designed by Edward Silverstein, later architect of the Louisiana Superdome. It hosted the PGA Tour's New Orleans Open from 1963 to 1988, drawing eight World Golf Hall of Famers who combined for 263 tour wins and 53 majors. The Firemen's Pension Fund bought the bankrupt club in 2003 and reopened it to public play.
