Jackson Park Golf Course opened in 1899, making it the first public golf course west of the Alleghenies and the first in the Midwest. Advocate Colonel Bernard Irwin pushed for a course where golfers of limited means could play at nominal cost rather than joining a private club, and play was free until 1920. By 1925 it was reported to be the world's busiest golf course, and the 18 hole layout still runs along the lake with mature hardwood trees lining its fairways.
