Tom Bendelow designed the course, which opened in 1911 on the site of the bankrupt Pickwick Country Club. The layout is known for small, bunkered greens and heavy tree lines. It hosted the 1915 PGA Western Open, won by Tom McNamara, the 1943 Women's Western Open, won by Patty Berg, and the 1962 Illinois PGA. The club still runs a caddie program tied to the Evans Scholars Foundation.
