Glen Head occupies the former Women's National Golf and Tennis Club, an early-1920s course that the current club purchased for 350,000 dollars in June 1947 and reopened for play in April 1948 with about 176 founding members. A fire broke out during a Saturday dance in 1954, and the insurance proceeds funded the club's first rebuild. The original women's course had roughly 80 more sand traps than the current layout, most of which were removed over time to improve playability.
