The Country Club of Troy was established in 1925, when founding president Charles Stone commissioned Walter J. Travis, winner of the US Amateur in 1900, 1901 and 1903 and the British Amateur in 1904, to design the course. It was Travis's final course design. The clubhouse, built in 1927 by architect Pliny Rogers, overlooks the Poestenkill Creek gorge and the 18th hole.
