Hickory Hills Country Club was founded by John T. Woodruff, who converted his farmhouse into the clubhouse and named the course after his farm; it opened in 1926. Bill Stewart, father of PGA champion Payne Stewart, won the Missouri Golf Association Amateur Tournament there in 1953. The clubhouse burned down on December 7, 1954, and reopened in 1956, and club member Payne Stewart went on to win the 1999 US Open.
