George Wright Golf Course was designed by Donald Ross and opened in April 1938, built with Works Progress Administration labor after the City of Boston took the land in 1930. Construction used about 60,000 pounds of dynamite to clear ledge and some 72,000 cubic yards of fill. The 156-acre layout is hilly, with blind shots and narrow tree-lined fairways, and locals sled on the 12th hole's slope in winter. The city took over operating it in 2004.
