Berkshire Hills was founded in 1924 when the club purchased 180 acres of land for 25,000 dollars, and A.W. Tillinghast's 18-hole design was completed in 1928, the only original Tillinghast course in Massachusetts. The original clubhouse burned down in March 1941 and was rebuilt by that summer after 75 members signed bank obligations to finance it. Arnold Palmer and Gene Littler played an exhibition match at the club in 1964.
