Echo Valley was founded by Des Moines businessmen Eddie Coppola and Hy Diamond with an explicitly inclusive membership policy, in contrast to the exclusionary practices of some other area clubs at the time. Edward L Packard of LaSalle, Illinois designed the course, with construction beginning in 1967 and the club opening in 1970. The land had previously been used by Coppola to raise quarter horses, including Hall of Fame member Coy's Bonanza.
