The course was designed by Olmsted Brothers with George Thomas Jr and William Bell, opening in 1924 as an amenity for the Palos Verdes Project. The routing uses the site's barrancas, creeks and hills, with small greens and narrow fairways, and fourteen of eighteen holes give views of the Pacific. Alfred Tillinghast reworked the course in 1936 and Ted Robinson did so again in 1977. A 2013 renovation removed trees to restore ocean views and recover lost design features.
